Meet the Coach

I am John Bush and I believe that my diverse life experiences and education combine to bring breadth and depth to my work as a Life Coach.

I grew up on a family farm in Upstate New York. After graduation from Houghton College, NY, I moved to California and began a career with Bank of America. My last position was as Senior Training Officer in Los Angeles. I left B of A to earn an MBA at UCLA and began a career in financial and general management. I was owner and President of an aviation business in San Carlos, CA. I have been a coach and consultant to organizations in law, dental and engineering.

I changed my life direction in 1985.

I earned a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary and completed postgraduate studies in psychology and addictions counseling at California State University, Los Angeles.

I moved to Jenkintown, PA in 1989 and was ordained as a minister. I conducted a practice in addictions counseling and psychotherapy until 1997 when my wife and I moved to Nevada County, CA.

I have been engaged with several Nevada County nonprofit organizations in leadership roles. These include The Center for the Arts, Music in the Mountains, InConcert Sierra, Foothill Theater Company, Community Players, Experimental Aircraft Association and AnimalSave.

I realized a lifelong dream in 2013

I was granted the degree of Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.)  The Union Newspaper wrote an article.

'Never too late — Nevada County man gets doctorate at 76'

Local 76-year-old John Bush has faced many hurdles in his life with the belief that it is never to late to follow your dreams. That philosophy was manifested in his recent graduation from the Professional School of Psychology in Sacramento, where he received his doctorate July 30.

His receipt of a doctorate was not motivated by professional advancement or higher pay but by personal enjoyment of learning, Bush said.

“I’ve been saying, ‘Someday, I’m going to get a doctorate,’ and I had the opportunity eight years ago and I had the time to devote to it, so I met the man who’s the president of the graduate school, talked to him and said ‘Let’s go for it!’” Bush said. [to read more click here]

I am a recovering alcoholic.

I have been sober thirty-six years. I know the pain and struggles of learning to live a sober life. I know the many changes that must be made after stopping use of the substance.

I have studied addictions, worked as a counselor, and successfully helped many men, women and families as they found life in the recovery process.

In my life here in Nevada County I have enjoyed acting and singing with a number of choruses.

I especially enjoy flying Yellow Bird, the light airplane that I built.

My wife and I are active members of our community and strongly believe that community is an action word, all of us participating, giving and supporting to the growth and health of all.
